With good brushing, flossing and regular checkups, a crown often lasts 10 to 15 years or longer. Grinding, chewing ice or using your teeth as tools can shorten that.
We numb the tooth completely before we prepare it, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain. The tooth may be a little sensitive for a few days afterward.
Usually two. At the first visit we prepare the tooth, take a digital scan and place a temporary crown. At the second, we fit and bond your permanent crown.
Call us so we can put it back on. In the meantime, keep the tooth clean, avoid chewing on that side, and save the temporary crown.
The crown itself can't decay, but the natural tooth underneath can, especially where the crown meets the gum. Brushing, flossing and regular cleanings protect it.
A filling works when a smaller part of the tooth is damaged. When a large portion is broken, cracked or weakened, a crown covers and protects the whole tooth so it doesn't break further.
