Tooth-colored repair · Ages 12 and up
Quick Answer Dental fillings repair teeth damaged by cavities or small breaks. Tooth-colored composite fillings blend with surrounding enamel and restore the tooth’s shape. At Ethos Advanced Dental Care in Temecula, we evaluate adults and teens ages 12 and up to determine whether a filling or another treatment fits the damage.
Saturday appointments · 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A tooth-colored filling can repair a limited area of damage when enough healthy tooth remains to support it. The right choice depends on the tooth, your bite, and the depth of the cavity.
| Question | Quick facts |
|---|---|
| What is it? | Composite resin placed in a prepared tooth to replace missing or decayed tooth structure. |
| Who is it for? | People with suitable cavities or minor damage. We see patients ages 12 and up. |
| How long is the visit? | Timing depends on the size, location, and number of fillings. We provide an estimate when planning treatment. |
| How many visits? | Often one treatment visit after assessment. Multiple teeth or complex problems may require additional appointments. |
| What is recovery like? | Usually little downtime. Numbness and temporary sensitivity can affect eating and comfort. |
| How long does it last? | Often several years. Bite forces, filling size, and home care affect longevity; replacement may eventually be needed. |
| What does it cost? | Quoted before treatment begins. |
| What about insurance? | We accept most PPO plans, with exclusions listed below. Treatment benefits depend on your plan and are not guaranteed. |
Is a filling right for you?
We determine whether you need a filling by examining the tooth and using dental X-rays when appropriate. Symptoms alone cannot show how far decay has progressed.
A cavity may cause sensitivity to cold, sweets, or chewing. You might notice a hole, a rough edge, or food collecting beside an old filling. Some cavities cause no pain. Bring up any change you have noticed, even if it comes and goes.
Not every dark spot needs a filling. Staining, early enamel changes, cracks, and worn restorations need different assessments. During your visit, we explain what we find and why we recommend monitoring, preventive care, or repair. Our general dentistry care in Temecula includes evaluating these everyday concerns.
The filling material
Tooth-colored fillings use composite resin, a material that can be matched to the shade of your teeth. We shape it to replace the missing portion of the tooth.
Composite can be used on front and back teeth when the location and size of the repair are suitable. It bonds to tooth structure and needs a clean, dry working area during placement. A filling that looks natural still needs regular care and checks.
The American Dental Association’s guide to tooth-colored fillings explains their uses and limitations. No filling material is right for every tooth, and no filling is guaranteed to last a lifetime.
Step by step
Your visit includes an assessment, a treatment discussion, and, when appropriate, preparation and repair of the tooth. The exact steps depend on what the examination shows.

Compare your options
A filling repairs a limited defect, while more extensive damage may need a crown or treatment inside the tooth. We recommend treatment based on the remaining tooth structure and the condition of the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels.
| Option | When it may be considered | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Composite filling | A cavity or small break with adequate supporting tooth structure. | Replaces the damaged portion directly in the tooth. |
| Inlay or onlay | A defect that needs a custom restoration covering part of the tooth. | Rebuilds a selected area; an onlay also covers one or more chewing cusps. |
| Dental crown | A weakened or extensively damaged tooth that needs broader coverage. | Covers the prepared tooth to restore its shape and function. |
| Root canal treatment | Infected or seriously inflamed pulp that cannot be managed with a filling alone. | Treats the tissue inside the tooth; a filling or crown restores it afterward. |
Read about dental crowns for damaged teeth and root canal therapy if you have been told your cavity is deep. These treatments solve different problems; choosing the smallest treatment only helps when it can adequately address the damage.
Cost & coverage
We quote your dental filling cost before treatment begins. The price depends on the tooth, the number of surfaces involved, and the treatment needed.
Ask us to explain the proposed care and your estimated payment before scheduling. A quote for one tooth may differ from a quote for another because the repairs are different sizes or involve different problems.
For patients without insurance, we offer the Ethos Cares in-house dental plan.
You can also ask about financing through CareCredit and Sunbit. We can discuss these options alongside your treatment quote.
We accept most PPO plans. We do not accept Delta Dental PPO, MetLife PPO, United Concordia, or Tricare. Check our insurance information and contact us with your plan details. Acceptance of a plan does not establish coverage for a particular filling.
New patient special
Our new patient special is $99 for an exam, X-rays, and cleaning, or $79 for ages 12–17. This is a separate offer from filling treatment; the filling cost is quoted before care begins.
Your comfort
We can discuss your concerns and available comfort options before treatment. Tell us whether your main concern is the injection, sounds, keeping your mouth open, or a previous experience.
We offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation. Suitability depends on your health history and planned care. Sedation is not necessary for every filling. Review our sedation dentistry options in Temecula, and ask which approach may fit your needs. Follow any eating, medication, and transportation instructions we give you.
After your visit
Follow your aftercare instructions, let numbness wear off before chewing, and keep the tooth clean. Avoid hot drinks while you cannot feel temperature normally.
Some sensitivity may occur after a filling. Let us know if it worsens, persists, or makes eating difficult. A bite that feels high also needs attention. The Australian Dental Association’s filling guide explains common sensitivity and why fillings need ongoing checks.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth each day. A filling does not prevent decay elsewhere on the tooth. Keep the checkup schedule we recommend and tell us about grinding, broken edges, or food repeatedly catching in one place.

Common questions
Patients commonly ask about symptoms, comfort, timing, costs, and replacing older fillings. These answers explain the usual considerations; your examination determines the recommendation for your tooth.
Yes. A cavity can develop without pain, especially before it becomes deeper. We assess the tooth and may recommend X-rays to check areas between teeth or beneath existing restorations. Waiting for a toothache can allow the damage to progress. An examination helps distinguish decay from a stain or another concern.
The time depends on the tooth, the size of the repair, and how many fillings you need. Many fillings can be completed in one treatment visit after assessment. We give you a timing estimate when planning care. Tell us about work or school commitments so we can discuss scheduling.
Local anesthetic can reduce discomfort during treatment, although you may still notice pressure or vibration. Tell us if you feel pain so we can reassess your comfort. Temporary sensitivity can occur afterward. We also offer sedation options when appropriate and can discuss anxiety before you come in.
Wait until numbness has worn off before chewing so you do not bite your cheek, lip, or tongue. Follow the instructions we give you for your specific repair. Composite is hardened during treatment, but your comfort, bite, and any sedation instructions also affect when you should eat normally.
Tooth-colored fillings often last several years, but there is no fixed replacement date for every patient. The filling’s size, location, your bite, and oral hygiene affect its lifespan. We check for wear, damage, and decay during examinations. A filling may need repair or replacement when it no longer functions adequately.
An intact silver-colored amalgam filling does not automatically need replacement. We examine the filling and surrounding tooth for decay, damage, or other clinical concerns. Removing a sound filling can sacrifice healthy tooth structure. If replacement is necessary, we discuss suitable materials and whether the tooth needs more support.
Some early enamel changes can be managed before a hole forms, but an established cavity usually needs a restoration. We assess whether preventive treatment or monitoring is suitable. A visible mark alone cannot tell you which approach is needed. Ask us to explain the stage of decay and the recommended next step.
Benefits for fillings depend on your specific plan, and coverage is not guaranteed. We accept most PPO plans, but not Delta Dental PPO, MetLife PPO, United Concordia, or Tricare. Contact us with your insurance details. We quote treatment before it begins and can discuss estimated patient costs.
