Nervous about the dentist? Oral conscious sedation helps you relax deeply through fillings, extractions, implants and longer visits, with no needles needed to start it. Many patients remember little of the appointment afterward.
Local anesthetic is still used · A companion must drive you home
Oral conscious sedation is a prescription sedative taken by mouth before your appointment. It leaves you deeply relaxed and drowsy. You stay awake enough to breathe on your own and respond to your dentist, but most patients feel calm and remember little of the visit. We still numb the area with local anesthetic, so you're comfortable as well as relaxed.
It works well for mild to moderate dental anxiety, it doesn't require an IV, and it costs less than IV sedation. It may help if you have:

Here's how we prepare you and keep you comfortable from start to finish.
We go over your medical history and medications and talk about what worries you, so we can decide together whether sedation is right for you.
You'll get written instructions on when to take the medication and what to do about food and drink beforehand.
A responsible adult brings you in and will take you home afterward.
Once you're calm, we numb the area and complete your treatment, checking on you throughout the visit.
Your companion takes you home. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day while the medication wears off.

Yes. After oral sedation you can't drive or go home alone. Plan for a responsible adult to bring you to the appointment, take you home and stay with you while the medication wears off.

You'll feel drowsy for several hours after your appointment. Plan to rest at home for the remainder of the day and avoid driving, work decisions and alcohol until the next day.
No. Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is breathed in through a mask and wears off within minutes. Oral conscious sedation is a medication taken by mouth, so its calming effect is deeper and lasts longer.
Most dental plans don't cover sedation used only for anxiety, though some do in specific situations. We check your benefits and tell you the cost before your appointment.
If anxiety keeps you from getting regular cleanings and checkups, ask us. For some patients, a sedated first visit is what makes it possible to get back on track.
