What to Eat After Wisdom Teeth Removal: A Day-by-Day Food Guide

By Ethos Advanced Dental Care · Updated October 7, 2026

After wisdom teeth removal, what you eat makes a real difference in how comfortable you are and how quickly you heal. The goal for the first few days is simple: nothing hot, nothing crunchy, nothing through a straw. Here’s a day-by-day guide our Temecula patients use.

The short answer: For the first day, eat cool, smooth foods like yogurt and applesauce. On days two and three, add soft, lukewarm foods like eggs and mashed potatoes. Most people can eat soft solids by days four to seven. Avoid straws, crunchy foods, spicy foods and very hot drinks for at least a week.

First 24 Hours: Cool and Smooth

Stick to cool, smooth foods that need no chewing. Cold foods can also ease swelling.

  • Yogurt or pudding
  • Smoothies, eaten with a spoon, not a straw
  • Applesauce
  • Cool, blended soups
  • Ice cream or frozen yogurt without chunks
  • Cottage cheese

Days 2–3: Soft and Lukewarm

As numbness and the first swelling pass, you can add soft, lukewarm foods. Keep chewing away from the extraction sites.

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Mashed potatoes or mashed sweet potatoes
  • Oatmeal or cream of wheat, cooled to lukewarm
  • Soft-cooked pasta like mac and cheese
  • Refried beans
  • Hummus
  • Ripe banana or avocado

Days 4–7: Soft Solid Foods

Most people can start eating soft solids that need gentle chewing. Go slowly and stop if anything hurts.

  • Soft fish like salmon or tilapia
  • Shredded chicken in broth
  • Well-cooked vegetables
  • Soft bread without crust
  • Pancakes

Foods to Avoid for at Least a Week

  • Straws. Suction can pull the blood clot out of the socket and cause dry socket.
  • Crunchy or crumbly foods like chips, nuts, popcorn and crackers, which can get stuck in the socket.
  • Spicy and acidic foods, which can sting the healing gums.
  • Very hot foods and drinks, which can increase bleeding and swelling.
  • Alcohol, especially if you’re taking prescription pain medicine.

When Can You Eat Normally Again?

Most people are back to their usual diet within about a week to two weeks, depending on how many teeth were removed and whether they were impacted. Let comfort be your guide, and call us if eating gets more painful after day three instead of easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drink coffee after wisdom teeth removal?

Wait until the numbness wears off, and let it cool to lukewarm for the first few days. Hot drinks can increase bleeding and swelling, and don't use a straw.

When can I eat solid food after wisdom teeth removal?

Most people can start soft solids around days four to seven and return to their usual diet within about one to two weeks.

Why can't I use a straw after an extraction?

Suction from a straw can pull the blood clot out of the socket, which causes a painful condition called dry socket.

Is ice cream OK after wisdom teeth removal?

Yes, in the first day or two, as long as it's smooth with no nuts or hard pieces. Cold foods can help ease swelling.
