The Short Answer

When Does a Tooth Need to Come Out?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth that can't be saved. We always try to keep your natural tooth first with a filling, crown or root canal, so extraction is the last option, not the first. When it is the right call, removing the tooth stops the pain and protects the teeth around it.

Common reasons a tooth needs to be extracted:

  • A tooth broken below the gum line
  • Decay too deep to repair
  • A severe infection or abscess
  • Advanced gum disease and loose teeth
  • An impacted wisdom tooth
  • Crowding before orthodontics

Types of Extractions

Two Kinds of
Tooth Extractions.

01

Simple Extraction

For a tooth that's fully visible above the gum. The tooth is loosened and removed after numbing.

Most Common
02

Surgical Extraction

For a tooth broken at the gum line or not fully erupted. A small opening in the gum lets us remove it in pieces.

Planned on X-Ray or 3D Scan
03

Wisdom Teeth

Impacted or partly erupted third molars that are causing problems.

04

Emergency Extraction

A painful, infected or broken tooth seen the same day whenever possible.

The Process

What to Expect
Step by Step.

Here's how a tooth extraction works at Ethos.

01

Exam & X-Ray

We look at the tooth and its roots and confirm it can't be saved.

02

Plan the Replacement

Before we remove it, we talk about whether and how to replace the tooth.

03

Numbing & Comfort

We numb the area completely. Oral conscious sedation is available if you'd like.

04

Gentle Removal

The tooth is loosened and removed; you'll feel pressure but not sharp pain.

05

Aftercare

You'll go home with gauze, written instructions and our phone number.

06

Follow-Up

We check healing and, when you're ready, start your replacement tooth.

How much does a tooth extraction cost in Temecula?

It depends on whether the tooth is fully visible or needs a surgical extraction, whether it's a wisdom tooth, and whether you choose sedation. After your exam and X-ray, we give you a written estimate with your insurance applied.

Does insurance cover tooth extractions?

Most PPO plans cover part of a medically necessary extraction, up to your annual maximum. We check your benefits before treatment so you know your share.

Can I get a tooth pulled the same day?

We see dental emergencies the same day whenever possible, and many extractions can be done at that visit. If there's a severe infection, we may need to calm it down with medication first.

Does getting a tooth pulled hurt?

We numb the area completely, so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. Oral conscious sedation is available if you're anxious. Soreness afterward usually improves within a few days.

Do you only pull teeth when you have to?

Yes. We try to save a tooth first with a filling, crown or root canal. We recommend extraction only when a tooth can't be saved or is causing problems for the teeth around it.

How long does it take to heal after an extraction?

Most people feel better within a few days. The gum usually closes over the socket within a couple of weeks, and the bone underneath keeps healing for a few months.

What should I eat after a tooth extraction?

Soft, cool or lukewarm foods for the first few days, like yogurt, eggs, mashed potatoes and soup that isn't hot. Avoid straws, crunchy foods and chewing on that side until it heals.

Should I replace a pulled tooth?

Usually, yes, unless it's a wisdom tooth. A gap lets nearby teeth shift and the bone shrink over time. A dental implant, bridge or partial denture can fill the space, and we'll talk through the options before the extraction.

What is dry socket?

Dry socket happens when the blood clot in the socket comes loose too early, causing throbbing pain a few days after the extraction. Avoid straws, smoking and spitting for several days. If pain gets worse after day three, call us.
