If it’s been years since your last dental visit, you’re not alone, and you won’t be lectured here. People put off the dentist for all kinds of reasons: cost, a bad past experience, a busy life or simple nerves. The longer it’s been, the harder it can feel to call. Here’s exactly what happens when you come back to the dentist at Ethos, so there are no surprises.
The short answer: Your first visit back starts with a conversation, then digital X-rays, a complete exam and a cleaning or a plan for one. If anything needs treatment, you get a plain-language explanation and a written estimate, and nothing is done without your OK.
Step 1: A Conversation First
Before anyone looks in your mouth, we talk. Tell us what’s been holding you back, whether anything hurts, and what you’d like to get out of the visit. If you’re anxious, say so. It changes how we pace the appointment, and it’s never a problem.
Step 2: Digital X-Rays
X-rays show what’s happening between your teeth and under the gums, where most problems start. We use Schick digital X-rays, which can reduce radiation exposure by up to 80% compared with traditional film.
Step 3: A Complete Exam
Your dentist checks every tooth, your gums, your bite and the soft tissues of your mouth. If it’s been a while, we’ll measure the gum pockets around each tooth to check for gum disease.
Step 4: A Cleaning, or a Plan for One
If your gums are healthy, you’ll usually get a regular cleaning. If there’s a lot of tartar below the gum line, which is common after a long gap, we may recommend a deep cleaning at a separate visit so it can be done thoroughly and comfortably.
Step 5: Your Plan, in Plain Language
If anything needs treatment, we’ll show you on your X-rays, explain what’s urgent and what can wait, and give you a written estimate with your insurance applied. You decide what to do and when. Nothing is done without your OK.
If You’re Nervous About the Dentist
Dental anxiety is common, and there are real ways to make visits easier. Ask about oral conscious sedation, which helps you relax deeply through longer appointments. Very early cavities can sometimes be treated with Curodont, with no drill and no numbing.
What It Costs
Most PPO plans cover cleanings and exams, often at little or no cost to you, and we check your benefits before your visit. New patients without insurance can get a complete exam and X-rays for $99. See our general dentistry page for more.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the dentist judge me for not coming in for years?
No. Lots of patients come back after a long gap. Our job is to help you get healthy from here, not to lecture you about the past.
What if I need a lot of work?
We'll show you what we find, separate what's urgent from what can wait, and give you a written estimate. You can spread treatment out over time to fit your budget and insurance benefits.
Will my first cleaning hurt?
Most cleanings are comfortable. If there's heavy buildup below the gums, we may recommend a deep cleaning with the area numbed so you stay comfortable.
How much is a first visit without insurance?
New patients without insurance can get a complete exam and X-rays at Ethos for $99.
